A few months ago, we went to see Trevor Noah and, as you might expect, he was fantastic. Even better (and cuter) in person!
He had a lot of hilarious jokes and many great insights, but one question in particular stood out as one to tuck into my back pocket and to share with you.
“What if we’re wrong?”
Now, this can be taken many, many ways, but in terms of how we might apply it to us – our ambitious, entrepreneurial, lovely selves – here’s my take:
When imposter syndrome creeps in and we think “Wow, she has it all together. I’ll never…” EHH, NOPE. What if we’re wrong? First of all, she might not actually have it all together. Does anyone, really??? And just because someone else might, doesn’t mean we cannot.
When doubt sets in and we’re all “My client hasn’t responded yet, they probably hate me and never will.” UM, NO. What if we’re wrong? Maybe they’re busy too, maybe life got hectic, maybe their email glitched. They most likely do not hate you and will very surely reply soon. Maybe send a friendly follow up and check in.
When procrastination hits and we tell ourselves “Ugh, I’m such a procrastinator” and sulk in it (procrastinating even more). HOLD UP. What if we’re wrong? We weren’t born procrastinating, it’s not a personality type… you’re doing it for a reason, so dig into it, move along, and trust that you aren’t defined by it.
In short, thoughts come and go with a quickness – negative self talk, assumptions of others, worst case scenarios, mindset drama, judgement – sometimes it’s chatter in our head that we aren’t even fully aware of. But in those moments when you catch it, ask yourself “What if we’re wrong?”
